This is what you get for linking an old article in a comment on a new one… a fresh comment! I was looking for this article 2 years ago but couldn’t find the darn thing. Google must not have you indexed well enough.
Between when you wrote this and when I’m rereading it today, I’ve since joined that hellscape you reference in the second sentence and you could not be more correct. Such a loud (and often times cruel?) bunch!
Something interesting I learned in the move to Substack is that the SEO for Substack-based domains is AWFUL. Google just, I guess, decided at some point that anything on Substack must be garbage, which is weird, because Google aggressively indexes Reddit, an even less reliable source.
My SEO recovered when I finally paid Substack $50 (thank you, subscribers!) to move from decivitate.substack.com to decivitate.jamesjheaney.com. Turns out Google still had some stored up reputation for my old domain, and I aggressively created links and redirects between the two domains (while pruning out MOST duplicate articles that had been published on both sites) until, jackpot, I show up in Google search results again.
"Cruel" is the right word, btw. I've got an article coming out Sept 3 about municipal taxes where I again refer to the WSP Neighbors page, and I think a footnote calls them "performatively cruel." It's an awful place. Absolutely the worst foot our city could put forward. I did notice that you'd joined it, but why? You're not even in Dakota County!
I never know if adding “James Heaney” or “Decivitate” to my search string is the right tact because both just seam to fail. So instead I’ve taken to just scrolling backwards in your archive until I find the old MOMS article so I can like the proper comment.
I was being served posts from the group on FB, especially the great ‘free chips and salsa’ saga. I figured “hey I work off Robert 5 days a week now, might as well see what’s happening” and was not ready for the floodgates that opened after actually joining!
"James J Heaney" or even "jamesjheaney" works pretty well for me, fwiw. Disambiguates from all those other James Heaneys, who probably hate me.
Scrolling the archive works, too, though. And Substack search also works very nicely if you can remember a word from the title or a word that's used a lot in the article, as long as it's set to search De Civitate instead of all of Substack (which it tries to do a lot, because Substack desperately wants to be Longform Reddit or something).
